Dogfight at Southwark Playhouse

Hey there,

So many of you will know that I am a big fan of musicals. Last Friday, whilst in London I ventured away from the main "theatreland" area of the West End to see a musical called Dogfight at the Southwark Playhouse, which is a little theatre about 5 minutes walk away from Elephant and Castle Tube Station.

Based on the 1991 movie of the same name, Dogfight centres around the lead male character, Eddie Birdlace and his friends and fellow marines having one last night before going away to Vietnam in 1963. In this last night, the marines organise something called a Dogfight in which each marine brings the ugliest girl to the dance and the winner gets a money prize. Whilst on the hunt for "his girl" Eddie bumps into quiet, innocent Rose in her mum's dinner and invites her to the dance as his "date".
I'm not going to say anything else about the story because I don't want give anything away but safe to say, this chance meeting with Rose changes Eddie and what really matters in his life.

I first about this musical when it came out in America. As soon as I heard the music, I was hooked and when I knew it was coming over to the UK, I knew I had to get myself a ticket and watch it live... I was not disappointed.

The entire cast were amazing (not to mention gorgeous!! Let's just say Marines in uniforms and sometimes out of them...thank you) and the theatre, whilst being small and intimate, works perfectly as the setting for this play because you get sucked into everything and become part of Eddie's look back over everything that happened in the past, whilst he is travelling back to San Francisco, where everything started.

Overall, this musical was everything I dreamed it was going to be to see live and more. There are laughs and amusing moments to join in with but there is also a lot of heart and emotion to the play too.

I urge anyone to go and see it if you are around London before it finishes on 13th September. It hasn't got as much publicity as the big shows have but honestly it is totally worth a trip out of the West End theatre area for. Please Please Please go and check it out if you can, you will not be sorry.

Lots of Love,
Clare
