The Musical Theatre Tag

Hey there,

Everyone here knows that I have a big love and fascination for make up, beauty and everything else girly. However some of you might not know is that I'm a big musical fan. I have been brought up watching them and the love has grown and grown.

Whilst spending far too much time on YouTube recently I found the Musical Theatre Tag and thought that it would be good to have a go. Are you sitting comfortably?

1. What was the first musical you ever saw?
The first musical I remember seeing is Grease when I was about 8 or 9. It was in my local theatre and I remember sitting in the stalls. Look at me remembering things.

2. What was your favourite musical growing up?
Cats. The music, the costumes, the magic. I have memories of seeing a touring version of Cats when I was around 9 or 10, they came in the audience during the opening overture and hissed at people it was just really cool to see.

3. Were you ever in a musical?
The closest I've ever got to being in one was doing Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat at school... I was in the chorus.

4. What was the first musical you saw on Broadway?
I have never been to Broadway :( The first thing I saw on a West End Stage was Legally Blonde, which is a classic bubblegum pop peppy musical, which sadly isn't in the West End anymore. It was really good though.

5. If you could be any female character in any musical who would you be and why?
Easy!! Elphaba... Hands down. Why you ask? I have four reasons...

  • I want to be painted green (I'm actually eyeing up a green paint stick for Halloween look, I'd like to do)
  • I want to belt out some of the best known riffs/songs in a muscial.
  • I want to be craned up high above a stage with my cape bellowing behind me.
  • She ends up with a gorgeous looking man.

6. Which male character?
Which male character would I be? Hmmm either Elder Cunningham from the Book of Mormon, because he's a hilarious character to be OR Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because he's a little kooky like me plus he owns a chocolate factory (every girls' fantasy)

7. Favourite musical song to sing in the shower?
First up... I'm more of a bath kind of girl. Secondly.. I have a few. I love trying to Belt out Defying Gravity. I also love to sing A Little Fall of Rain (Les Mis), Pretty Funny (Dogfight) and Pure Imagination (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) amongst many others.

8. Who is your favourite theatre actress?
I have a few... I fall in love with people's voices. Three of my biggest favourites are Idina Menzel, Julie Atherton and Kerry Ellis.
Idina Menzel is a name a lot more people know about thanks to the Disney Film, Frozen. She is the voice behind Elsa but she was the original Broadway Elphaba in Wicked and also the original Maureen in Rent. I have never had the pleasure to hear her sing live but it is a dream I have.
Julie Atherton is probably the one out of the three that you have never heard of. Her voice is amazing and her comedic timing is brilliant, seriously check her out on YouTube.
Kerry Ellis has played many parts too, she was the original Meat in We Will Rock You, she's been Elphaba both sides do the Atlantic and she's also played nancy in Oliver! I have had the pleasure to hear her sing live in concert twice before and I'm seeing her again later this year and I can't wait.

9. Actor?
Ooh favourite actors... They are all so pretty and they have great voices. Let me give you some to look into. My Favourites include Gavin Creel, Simon Lipkin, Oliver Tompsett, Ramin Karimloo, Dean Chisnall... the list could go on and on.

10. Favorite film adaptation of a musical?
Right I'm going to be controversial...but I'm not a fan of most film adaptaions of musicals. I didn't enjoy the Les Mis Film as much as the stage musical, in fact I like to play spot the West End Actor whilst watching the film. I didn't really enjoy the Rock of Ages film either.
HOWEVER... my favourite film adaptation is Thoroughly Modern Millie. It is a little bit old but the music is good and it has Julie Andrews in it. What more do you need?

11. What do you think is most underrated musical?
I would like to say any of the Starkid Musicals.. If you don't know who Starkid are, they are a group of people who first met at the University of Michigan and have created and performed 3 Harry Potter Musicals, 2 parody musicals and also created original musicals too. Plus they are all available to watch online for free.

12. Overrated musical?
I don't think there are any overrated musicals, instead there are musicals I just don't wish to see.

13. What musical made you cry?
Out of all musicals I have seen I have cried at three.... Jesus Christ Superstar (the crucifixion makes me tear up every time and I'm not even a religious person), Les Miserables (the name alone hints it's not going to be a cheerful musical, but it is so emotional watching it) and finally The Lion King. I watched the Lion King last year for my birthday and I had a cry at least three times during it (mostly through nostalgia but also come on... anyone who doesn't cry at Mufasa's death hasn't got a heart).

14. What musical made you laugh?
The last musical to make me laugh out loud would have to be the Book of Mormon. It was written by the people behind South Park so the comedy may not be for everyone but it is a hilarious musical.. even my brother laughed and enjoyed it and he hates musicals.

15. Are there any musicals you saw and hated?
Nope... I only watch ones I want to see.

16. What musical do you want to see as a film?
Wicked! I think something amazing could be done, although I would cry if they ruined it.

17. Which musicals are you dying to see?
I Can't Sing, Once, Memphis (arrives in London later this year), The Commitments.

18. Any movie or book you think should be turned into a musical?
Urm.. I'm not sure. All of my favourite films and books are good as they are.

19. What is your all time favourite musical?
Wicked. Hands down my favourite of all time.

Ta-dah!! Musical Theatre Tag over and out.
