Giving Up on YouTube?

Hey there,

So I didn't know whether to write and publish this post as I know someone is going to say I'm doing it just for making a fuss/drawing attention to myself but oh well... people will think what they want.

For the past year (nearly) I have been publishing videos on my YouTube Channel twice a week, one video on a Wednesday and one on a Saturday. I really enjoy filming my videos, it is easier to film and edit for certain topics than it would be to find the words and grammar to write it down like I am now. However, there is so much competition on YouTube right now for views.

YouTube has changed a lot in the last few years, not just with it's many facelifts but also in the number of people out there who are uploading. When the likes of the Pixiwoo ladies, Zoella and others began there were a lot less people filming themselves, which meant that there weren't so many choices of people to watch. Watching them grow from strength to strength is amazing to see but it has also introduced many other people to the idea of becoming famous/popular on YouTube.

For myself, its not about being famous because well could you see me on Magazine Covers (like Zoella) or producing my own make up like (like Tanya Burr) because I don't... I don't have that commercially beautiful look.

There is one thing about YouTube that no-one says to people who are beginning out is that at times doing YouTube videos is a little soul-destroying. You see for a normal video it can take up to an hour to film and then a couple of hours to edit and then another few to upload and sort out thumbnails, the description etc. I am proud of every video that I put out but it hurts to see them getting limited views and no comments.

For this reason I ask you all to honestly tell me something... Do you watch/have you watched my videos? Did you like them/it? What videos do you like? Should I give up or persevere?

I am teetering on the edge between carrying on or giving up... I love filming but I don't know if all my effort is worth it.

Let me know in the comments what you think if anything.

Lots of Love,
Clare

  1. Honestly? If you love it then keep doing it. I am in exactly the same boat as you. Compared to your 300+ subscribers, I have 6, very limited views, and had no comments so far. I have no where near as many videos as you of course, but I love making them, I enjoy editing them and uploading them, and these YouTubers that are so big now, aside from the ones that seem to have got lucky and blown up within a year or so, the majority have been at it since 2006 and have only just got to 1 million subscribers, so these people have worked damn hard to get to where they are now.

I know I'm not producing anything different to anybody else out there at the moment, but I enjoy doing weekly vlogs of my life, and I enjoy doing tag videos, and I do have some different ideas up my sleeve for the hopefully not too distant future, that I'm just building up the courage to film and put up there, because it will mean putting myself out there, but if my channel can help me out with this project that I'm hoping to make a good go of, then that's got to be a good thing right?

  2. I'm going to give you my 100% honest opinion here, you've been doing youtube videos for almost a year, you said yourself that you enjoy it, you like making videos and despite the views and/ or comments, there are over 300 people subscribed to your youtube channel, so you've got to be doing something right.
You should never get down on yourself just because others seem to have it better, to you, it'll seem like, 'Oh this video only got 100 views' and 'I only have 300 subs', but there's probably another girl out there who's been doing youtube for two years, with only 100 subscribers and 10 views per vid, wondering how on earth you got so many watchers so quickly!
If you love what you're doing, don't give up! Let it show, put across your love for making videos and all things fashion and beauty, enjoy what you're doing and the rest will follow in time - and if it doesn't, at least you enjoyed yourself along the way ;)

Good luck lovely, never give up on something you love!

  3. I'm sorry you're feeling down about the videos. I've never watched any Youtube videos really, I don't really get it. Also, I like to read blogs on my phone and I don't have an internet connection at home, so trying to watch a video just wouldn't happen on my limited 3G. As others have said, if you are doing it because you enjoy it, then continue - does it matter how many people comment or watch if it's something you love?

  4. I think you should keep going. 300+ subscribers is not a small amount and I don't think you're getting limited views. People are watching your videos. Don't be so hard on yourself. Even YouTubers with hundreds of thousands and millions of subscribers rarely get view counts numbering anywhere near their total number of subscribers.
I don't think you should give up if you enjoy it and it's a good extension/ addition to your blog, as you say it's easier to make a video about some things than it is to write about them. And if you gave up now you'd be wasting all the hard work you've already put into it and by comparing your earlier videos to more recent ones you can tell that you've gained confidence and your videos are getting better and better.
The first year of anything is still early days, so keep going and remind yourself about what you have already achieved :)

P.S. I like your haul videos the best and it looks like other people do too. You've got over 400 views on some of your haul videos. Wow! That is definitely not limited views. Although I'm not saying just do haul videos. Don't want you spending all your money just so you can film hauls!

  5. Hi Clare,

I thought I'd let you know I'm one of your 300+ subscribers and I do watch all your videos, quite often more than once :)

I don't do youtube and I've always wanted to (as I'm so sure so many do) because if I'm completely honest when I first found out about youtubers (about a year ago) I got completed hooked. I was obsessed. Watching big youtubers made me think of a lifestyle I suddenly thought I absolutely needed in my life, and I craved that. I thought at first it was great (highly addictive) and would do wonders for my lifestyle but I quickly realised that actually watching these big youtubers was really not very good for my health at all. It started to make me dislike my own life, and compare it constantly "how can i make it better, how can I get what these people have", but of course they only show the idealistic parts of their lives, no doubt they are all living very much the same lives as we are.

Anyway what I want to get at is that I watch your videos, and not because they give me any false hopes about how my life could be but because they're real. In your videos you're just yourself! You aren't trying to make life seem more than it is, but you show that actually you can be confident and content just being who you are. That makes me want to watch - I can relate to that.

Maybe you don't get the masses of views or comments the bigger youtubers get, but thats because in many ways they offer something that's not real, and dream world, but in my books if being real means having less views I'd go for that any day. You offer something people can relate to and that's worth more than a few thousand views.

I can't tell you what to do, but I hope that helps you know, people are watching and we love what you do xx

  6. Hmmm I like watching them, but would never do them myself, it isnt me at all. I think if you enjoy doing it then you should do it, if you don't then well dont xx

  7. The only thing you need to remember is that you should never compare yourself or your channel to others that are bigger because they begun their journey about 5 years ago and I can guarantee that they didn't get many subs or views back then so keep doing what you love to do <3
