THOUGHTS: My thoughts on my spending ban

Hey Lovelies,

So a few months ago I came up with the idea to put myself on a spending ban beginning 28th April and ending on the 27th of July... which was the start of the two day London meet up known as the #julylondonmeetup ( I know that there is no reason for the hash tag but I like it that way).

I thought it would be nice to talk about what I learnt...

If you kept up to date with my fortnightly posts that I wrote during the spending ban, I failed at a complete non spend and I think the reason that happened was due to boredom and to a certain point a lack of self control (haha).

You see, when I get bored I go "internet window shopping", I go onto shop websites such as MAC, Boots, New Look, ASOS etc make up lists and put things in the "basket" and on occasion will just click the buy button and make myself all better and a little less bored. I think this is my problem, along with the blogsales forever going on plus my overall obsession with make up means that the temptation can always be strong.

And at times, I know I can be tempted very easily. Through the "ban", I tried my best to be less tempted but I learnt that the #bbloggers chats are the devil!! You make yourself believe you don't want something, the bbloggers chats will then make you think you want it.

I guess I learnt that through my spending ban, I can be a bit more restrained than I normally am. I've learnt to say no to myself when being tempted to even "internet window shop" (she says even though at the time of writing this I have a boots order and a feel unique order on their way).

What I learnt from my spending ban:

  • #bbloggers chats and blogsales are the devil.
  • I spend so much time on the New Look/Boots/MAC/ASOS/Selfridges/Debenhams etc websites (this needs to stop)
  • When I get bored I shop (this also needs to stop)
  • I am a shopaholic.
  • Debenhams will always have some kind of deal on beauty products, you don't need to rush and buy because there will probably be another deal coming up shortly after.
  • Same goes with Boots and Superdrug... there will always be a 3 for 2 or BOGOF deal flying around... if you don't need it don't buy it.. It will be around a few weeks after just the price will be a bit higher.

What I'm going to try and do from now on:

  • get rid of the shop bookmarks off my computer page, quick access isn't good for the purse.
  • stop making snap descisions when it comes to buying new things, too many times I will be in boots swatching and just picking up without considering if I need it or if its any good. From now I shall properly research and read reviews before jumping in and buying something. There are so many things in my collection which are never used because I have a lot.
  • I think I'm going to start a one out, one in policy. I will attempt not to buy anything until I've use.

I'm actually debating another spending ban, maybe even a 100 day one. I'm not sure. The fact that I technically failed at this spending ban makes me think that I would do the same with a different one.. what do you think?

Till Next Time,
Clare

  3. Loved the post. Te first step to tackling an issue, is admitting that there may be a problem! 😉 Limiting or budgeting might be easier than banning! Set a strict no more than 'x' amount for luxuries, instead of an outright ban. It's nice to treat and reward yourself sometimes! Hard work deserves some reward! ☺ (This post it to no way encourage people to buy. Haha!) LL x

  5. I've pretty much reached the same conclusion as you; I'm a bit of a shopaholic.. Aand I do the same errors you do.. Considering a spending ban myself.. Starting now until christmas.. I do the same thing you do, buy a lot cause it's on offer, when in reality 15-20% isn't THAT much, especially not if you won't be using it for 6 months.. Let me know if you decide on another spending ban as I'd be very interested to follow! x

    1. Very true. I'm proud of myself for not buying as part of Debenhams' 10% off offer yesterday. I will definitely let you know if I do another ban xx
